9CE and Aseptic Technique
Students, this morning, in 9CE acquired the correct technique for the aseptic method in microbiology. Mr Gunnoo demonstrated how to sterilise the wire loops by heating them, until glowing red, to destroy microorganisms present on the loop. Students then mastered the twisting off the broth cap with their little finger and holding it there, while sterilising the bottle before smearing the bacteria onto the agar plates.
7CN and Elasticity
On the 1st of July, 7CN investigated an alternative version to Hooke`s Law , where they looked at how adding mass to a rubber band affects its extension. Dr Lau explained how rubber bands provide an interesting contrast to springs, and how on stretching, they do obey Hooke`s law, and on unloading they show hysteresis. This is an early introduction to the physics GCSE concept.
