Amazing Students

Half Marathon World Record (Unofficial)!

As part of National School Sports Week, Mr Martin's Yr10 GCSE PE class were challenged during their lesson to break the half marathon world record. Challenge accepted!
To have any chance of beating the world record time of 57 mins 31 sec, students split themselves into 2 groups and stood at either end of the 100m track. The class then had one student sprinting 100m at a time before passing the baton to the next person. It was like a mass sprint interval session. Everyone completed individually between 8-10 x 100m sprints, however this proved to be way more tiring than they 1st thought!
As a team though, the class pulled together, sprinted with maximum effort and encouraged each other to complete a class half marathon in a time of 54 min 44 sec. They are now unofficially the half marathon world record holders! The class were very proud of their achievement and now have a deep appreciation for the pace the professional athletes must run at to achieve these sorts of times.

Well Done Winston!

Game Changer Ambassador.

Congratulations to our Y10 student, Asya D who has been selected to be Surrey's new, and only, Game Changer Ambassador.
Asya was nominated by the PE department for this national campaign run by the Girls' Football School Partnerships, in association with Barclay's and England Football. There were over 100 submissions throughout Surrey and Asya's nomination stayed top of the pile and won!
Although Asya is keen on all sports, her real passion lies with football. Currently studying for her GCSE PE (amongst other subjects), Asya has been a consistent player of football since playing for the team that won the county cup in Year 7.
Asya's journey in football has not been the easiest, as she was born with a hole in her heart. She also had a weak left ventricle which needed enlarging. At 3 days old she was having her first open heart surgery and had two more open heart surgeries at aged 4 and 8 years old.
Having surgery at 8 meant that Asya missed a lot of school in order to undergo lengthy recovery. She was unable to play sport for a long time but never gave up trying to get active and play football. Asya never saw herself as any different from her peers and did not let open heart surgery deter her from her passion and love for being active. As soon as she was able to, she was back on the pitch, and she worked very hard to make up for time missed!
The value of football is not lost on this female who loves being in a team, socialising with her friends, and above all staying active.

"When I first got told that I was chosen as the Barclay's Game Changer I was overwhelmed but then I took a minute to think and was comforted by Miss Singleton and Mrs Walton's warm smiles. I am excited to have the role of Barclay's Game Changer and I want to achieve many things, the most important one being equality for both boys and girls!"
As part of Asya's Game Changer role, she has already embarked on a series of training seminars and is currently working on an action plan with the team from the Surrey Girls' Football in Schools Partnership. She will then work closely with the Partnership to be an advocate for equal access to football in schools for all girls.................................. Watch this space to follow Asya's journey!
