55th Annual Sports Day

 Key Stage 3 Sports Day

On Friday 4th July, Winston held their 55th annual sports day. All KS3 students had previously taken part in heats to qualify for the field events and it was a pleasure to see the effort and quality of performances produced. On the day, the top ten finalists of each field event competed alongside the track heats and quickly we saw Mathew Hughes in Year 9 break his own and another school record in the High Jump, clearing a hugely impressive 1.80m. This inspired events across the rest of the day as we cheered along Alex Bowles who broke the school record for 80m hurdles in 11.96 seconds and long jump with 5.69m. Cheering each other one is a huge focus of the day and the camaraderie amongst the year groups is second to none. It was lovely to welcome back our Year 11 PE prefects who broke away from their post-GCSE summer holiday so help run events, support and the students and celebrate their effort, one using the day to celebrate her 16th birthday!  As the music blared and the crowd cheered on, we have to thank our emerging leaders in Year 9 for assisting the department with each event and also the film crew and Umbrella Club journalists. Sport has a place for everyone and the smiles on the students faces showed that.

As the sun shone and Mr Martin ran between the various starting positions of each track event, there were stand out performances that must be mentioned:

Sports Day is about our community and the whole day would not exist without the sports performers in lessons, the athletes on the day, the journalists, the new and returning helpers, the staff and school who cheer on during the last hour of the day and bring more noise than we have heard all year. The PE department would like to also thanks Mrs Martin for collating the scores, Mrs Thomas for photographing each event, Mr Inwards and his site team for their support along with Miss Wells in the music and sounds department. Mrs Kovic would also like to thank the PE staff for their energy and enthusiasm and the opportunities that they provide for the students.
