Getting Involved in Sport

 Winston Sports Week

Inspired by the Youth Sports Trust National School Sports Week, the PE Department organised its own Sports Week from 7th-11th July.

Lessons
In lessons students are being exposed to new sports which will be introduced into the PE Curriculum form September as well as new activities that foster collaboration and tactical thinking. Activities included Pickleball, Tchoukball, Skills Game Carousels, Ultimate Frisbee, Benchball and Football Rounders. Students have responded positively giving lessons their full engagement and effort.

Teacher v Students
Throughout the week Mr Fuller organised a range of competitive activities after school to see who would come out on top, the students or the teachers! The staff team won the opening activity of rounders but it was down hill from there as the students won in the Tennis (Ethan & Josh) as well as taking the top 3 places in the Basketball free throw competition (Mathew, Dalton & Amin). The teachers will need to do some training before next year!

Football Tournaments
Over 150 boys participated in the football tournaments organised on separate evenings for Yr7&8 and Yr9&10. There were some great goals scored and lots of competitive spirit seen. Some teams even had their own managers and physios! A big thank you to the student referees who helped out and allowed the tournament to flow.

Community Clubs Day
Five external clubs gifted Winston with their time and expertise to deliver 30 minute sessions to the classes timetabled with PE on Friday. Each class got to experience two of the sports being delivered, which included: American Football, Boxing, Rugby, Acrobatics and Pickleball. Everyone enjoyed trying something new and listening to new voices to help push the importance of physical activity outside of school and the options that are out there in the community. The American Football coaches even stayed an hour longer to deliver a session to our Yr9 GCSE students!

Assembly
Mrs Kovic & Mr Martin delivered assemblies last week, recognising the participation and success of those involved with our Sports Day and other events throughout the summer term e.g. District Tennis & English Schools Athletics. It has been fantastic to award so many different students with their medals, badges and/or certificates which recognises their dedication, performance and excellence.

Winston Sports Week has really shown the impact of sport and physical activity. We have seen students thrive, enjoying new challenges, building self-confidence, nourishing positive relationships with peers and appreciating the privilege it is to move. As the end of term approaches, we hope that everyone enjoys a physically active summer holiday!

Year 10 Leading Year 5

On Friday 18th July, the PE Department welcomed 85 x Year 5 Primary students to Winston. Over the 2 hours, each student had a go at 4 x 30 minute activities: Basketball, Tchoukball, Pickleball and Fitness Suite challenges.

Every activity was led and organised by our Year 10 Sport Prefects who all did a fantastic job at delivering and keeping the enthusiasm high. At the end of the morning all students were awarded a participation certificate and the group who gained the most points via the skill challenges at each activity were awarded medals. There was also recognition for 8 students who demonstrated great sporting values e.g. sportsmanship, resilience, fair play. Everyone did really well to try new sports and put all their energy into it.

We look forward to seeing some of these faces again next summer for transition day!
