Welcome to Winston

Year 7 September 2015

Welcome to our new Winston students; three hundred young people have been offered places at our school this week.  There are also twenty on our waiting list and we hope to be able to offer those students places in the coming weeks.
This is a very exciting time for Year 6 students and their parents.  Our first meeting with you will be on Thursday 12th March, when I will be able to introduce you to your Year Leader and members of her team, as well as key staff, including the subject leaders for English, Maths and Science. I realise that some students will be away having an amazing time on a residential activity; we will make sure that there are plenty of opportunities for you to come into Winston before September.  Perhaps you would like to join us for our Music Day in the summer term?
You can also look through this blog to see images of the work that we do at Winston.  Enjoy the pictures below of our staff, although they do not always dress this way!

World Book Day

On Thursday, 5th March, the World and Winston celebrated World Book Day!
Simultaneously, the entire school participated in a collective ‘D.E.A.R. Time’ (Drop Everything and Read), encouraging and promoting the act of reading for pleasure.
To add whimsy and promote the imaginative facets of reading, staff members bravely donned the costumes of their favourite literary characters and students responded enthusiastically.
In addition, every student at Winston has been given a 1£ book token, for use in participating bookstores and online. Here is a link with more information as to how to use your voucher and purchase a book for 1£ only! http://worldbookday.com/books/
We are already looking forward to World Book Day 2016!

The Science Department celebrated World Book Day, on Thursday, by dressing up as characters from Alice in Wonderland.  How many other characters from books did you spot during the day?

Developing our Enviromental Garden

Below are some photographs of a  selection of flowers being planted at break time by our newly established eco group. Mr Buocik, Assistant Site Manager, is really driving this forward and the students had a great time naming their plants!  The enviromnetal area is a great outdoor teaching and performance space, which is gradually being landscaped and enhanced by the hard work of both staff and students.

Basketball Success

On Tuesday 3rd March our year 7 and year 11 girls represented the school in the County Basketball Finals at Surrey Sports Park. Our year 7’s won 4 of their 5 group games going on to narrowly lose in the semi-finals to the eventual winners. We look forward to many more years of success with this talented team.
The year 11 girls convincingly made their way into the last 4 losing only one game. Sadly, the run came to an end in the Semi Finals, however, they bounced back to win the 3rd place playoff, a fantastic achievement.
