Community Radio Awards
"Our school radio, Radio Woking, is making waves in the radio industry getting 4 nominations for the illustrious Community Radio Awards 2024.
Our nominees, along with our IT Manager and Radio Woking Station Manager Mr Coll, went to an awards ceremony in Cardiff City Stadium.
Former student Luke McNamara started his radio career as a student here at Winston, where he was trained how to present a radio show. We are proud to say that Luke won the Bronze award for Young Presenter of the Year, which is no small feat considering this award is at a national level.
Luke puts his confidence down to something Mr Coll had said to him in his training, “Imagine you are presenting to one person, a friend or family member, and that really worked for me, and now I have an award!”
The station also had nominations for Community Radio Show, Best Newcomer and Best Specialist Music Show. Not bad for our first awards show!"
Umbrella Club
'Umbrella Club is back! Focused on celebrating and promoting the student voice, students from KS3 and KS4 have been collaborating on activities to celebrate different cultures and countries.
Last week the first group presented on Belgium's history, culture and how food can bring people together. Presentations will continue for the rest of the half term, before students decide what they would like Umbrella Club to focus on next term.'
And History Club is Back!
History Club has returned! Led by the History prefects, pupils from across the school took part in a History higher or lower quiz, testing their knowledge on various topics. Last week as part of the History Departments Remembrance activities, students learnt about the 'Forgotten Army' of WWII. These were British and Commonwealth soldiers who fought against the Japanese army in Burma (Myanmar). Students worked together to research and design a memorial to the soldiers who served in Burma'
History Club is on every Wednesday 3:00 to 3:45pm in Room 16.
