Newquay 2016
Monday 4th of July, 5:30am start, 105 students,
12 teachers, and a 5 hour trip broken up by a short pit stop to Costa could only
mean one thing. The annual year 7 trip down to Newquay. Tiredness was soon
forgotten as the students boarded the bus and the excitement reached fever
pitch. The Newquay trip has a reputation of being ‘the best trip your ever get
to go on’ and once again this year lived up to that lofty expectation. Kayaking, Bodyboarding, Surfing, Sailing,
Rafting, Swimming, Theme Park, Disco, Bowling, BBQ’s somehow had to be fit into
four and a half days, not to mention finding the time to squeeze some breakfast in and catch some
sleep.
The students were given no time to acclimatise to their
surroundings as they found themselves on the beach and in their wet suits
within 20 minutes of arriving at Tolcarne. Those waves wait for nobody! Newquay
2016 had begun and the new crop of talented Winston surfers were being formed.
In between hitting the beach there were Volleyball and Football matches being
played and there was even some time for some Weaver Fish to be trod on! (Ouch).
Monday came to an end with everyone watching the sunset roll in, tucking into a
BBQ on the beach. Lights out at 10 and nobody was complaining, some well earnt
rest was needed.
Tuesday was more of the same but ramped up a notch. Surfing,
Bodyboarding, Zorb Football, Blind Obstacle Course, Wall climbing and Archery
were all available on a rotation system for the students to get stuck into. The
evening time saw the students change into to some smarter wear and hit the
bowling alley. Competition was fierce, with many strikes being hit in-between
having a go on the arcade machines and pool tables. On Wednesday the students went to Swanpool beach. They were giving the unique opportunity to test their skills at coasteering and sailing in-between more kayaking and also paddle boarding. More importantly it was an opportunity to sample Cornwall’s finest ice cream!!!!
Thursday were the theme park and water park trips, as staff and students faced their fears on the rollercoasters. Some interesting dance moves were on display during the disco as everybody celebrated what a fantastic week it had been so far.
Friday was soon upon us and some very tired year 7’s made their way down to the beach for one final surf. Once again giving 100% to every session showing fantastic resilience to get back on their boards are falling off countless times. Less times than the majority of the staff however!!
Watching the kids each year attempt new challenges and overcome their fears is always an absolute pleasure and this year was no exception. The teamwork shown and the togetherness of the group was a joy to see and a real privilege to be a part of. No doubt Newquay will live long in the memory for these students and has given them the hunger to attend more trips as they continue to rise through the school. They were a credit to themselves and the school and should be commended on their hard work and willingness to try new things!!
