Year 10 Watts Gallery Trip
On Friday
the 7th November, a group of our GCSE Year 10 Art students went to
the unique artists village and exhibition – The watts Gallery. Focusing on the
project ‘Surroundings’ they explored the work of couple George and Mary Watts,
as well as those from the immersive external exhibition Scented Visions.
The students
started the day by exploring the urban surrounding of the intricately designed
chapel that Mary Watts created as a final resting pace for her and her husband.
The setting was beautiful fort the students to study amongst the Autumn colours
of the countryside.
The students then went on to study the work of The Watts couple focusing on the human form and George Watts prominent, symbolic messages within each painting. They also had a tour around the exhibition ‘Scented Visions’ where they studied contemporary works from various artists, looking at people within different environments, surrounded by various objects and what story they told. This exhibition also allowed the students to smell a variety of scents and understand how they help to paint a picture.
The day was concluded with an art workshop where the students collected objects from the natural surroundings within the grounds and produced layers, colourful reliefs ready for their portfolio.
The trip was an overall success and gave the student a lot of new stimuli and sources for their 'Surroundings' projects.
