Year 5 Classics Day

 non scholae sed vitae discimus.

We learn, not for school, but for life.

Winston welcomed 70 Year 5 students from local primary schools to learn all about the Classics. They carouselled a collection of Classics activities exploring the Ancient World and its presence in the here and now.

Astronomy: Storytelling through the Stars. Mr Spain transported students in Woking Planetarium through the myths and legends of Ancient Greece written in the stars.

Maths: Roman Numeral Code-Breakers. Miss Dunlop challenged students to use their knowledge of Roman Numerals to crack Latin codes.

Winston Extra: Daedalus and Icarus. Miss Burgess helped students navigate choice and consequence by examining the story of Icarus, the boy who flew too close to the sun and suffered the consequences.

Latin: Making Mythical Monsters. Mr Fisher introduced several Latin and Greek roots found in English for the names of animals and mythical beasts which students deciphered and then used to design and describe their own mythical creatures.

We were very impressed by the risk taking and self awareness of the students that visited and are looking forward to seeing them again, hopefully as Winston students.

The Latin Department will host Year 5s again in the Spring for our annual Latin Reading Competition
